Backgammon Boards
You will find that those who play backgammon
regularly prefer to use their own backgammon boards when they sit
down for a game. This is not unlike a pool player who arrives at the
pool hall with his or her own cue wrapped neatly in a case. The more
the game means to you the more individualized you become. Sometimes
players will refuse to use the backgammon boards of others as they
feel more comfortable, or luckier, using their own. This is one
reason that during competitions you use the house boards so no one
feels they have an advantage or for that matter a disadvantage.
When buying backgammon boards there are some things to consider.
First, if you are just learning all you really need is an
inexpensive board. These are often bought in sets of multi-games
where one side of the board is backgammon and the other side is for
using with chess or checkers. The backgammon pieces are often
plastic. They are interchangeable with checker pieces. For beginners
a set like this is just fine as they decide if they like the game or
not. There is no point in buying an expensive set and discovering
you don¡¦t like the game.
When you are ready to start looking at better backgammon boards you
will likely want one that is in a case for ease of carrying. There
are some that roll up. You simply unroll the board and set up for
play. Others are tabletop models that look like a small briefcase
when they are shut. These will have a handle for carrying them and
clips or locks to keep the board closed while being transported.
Backgammon boards are usually covered with a felt like material,
sometimes they are made with velour or sometimes suede, to make for
both a nice presentation and a good quality playing surface.
Many people find that backgammon is a great game to relax with. You
can play anywhere and if you join a backgammon club you have the
opportunity to play with different opponents and meet new people.
So, if you enjoy the game then a buying good set is worth it. It
should last you for years as long as you take good care of it.
